How to get back into alignment

The idea for this blog came to me recently when I was sick one weekend (just a fall cold!) and was forced to sit on the couch and binge-watch Ted Lasso. While that might not seem like a big deal, it is a huge deal for me! I “run hot,” as the people say, and it is a rare occasion when I sit still for long periods of time.

So naturally, I was annoyed on this weekend.

That being said, I have learned enough about my body over the years to know that when physical symptoms show up, I haven’t been paying close enough attention.

So, I tuned in and realized that I needed a break. I needed to chill. I needed to embrace rest without judging myself for being unproductive.

And then this blog idea came through.

First things first, what is alignment?

Alignment is the feeling of wholeness, joy, peace and inspiration. Alignment is the place where we feel like and know that we can handle anything, even when it is not all perfect. Life is never going to be perfect, but when we are in an aligned state, we can be proactive, we can respond instead of reacting, we can recognize our traumas and be compassionate with others, knowing that we will never know someone’s whole story. We can give ourselves unconditional love and acceptance without seeking external validation.

Sometimes, alignment feels like pure ease.

Some signs you might be out of alignment:

  • You’re sick

  • You feel down or unmotivated

  • A general feeling of malaise

  • A prolonged lack of energy

  • You are feeling like being less social than normal or you’re hiding from the world

  • You feel “off”

Basically, if you don’t feel good, you’re out of alignment and this can manifest in many ways, depending on how long you allow yourself to stay in that state. And let me just clarify that you will likely have moments each day when you are out of alignment. Not feeling good all the time is part of being a human, so no worries. You don’t need to worry that being out of alignment is going to manifest into bad things happening in your life. No, no, no.

The key is being able to look at the moments when you feel off, notice it and do something to return to a state of alignment. In other words, it’s all about your bounce-back rate.

Seven ways to come back to alignment

There are millions of ways in which you can raise your frequency; this is just a short list of what typically works for me. I do think it is important to use a variety of methods, depending on what is going on and what has you out of alignment.

Ok, here we go!

1) Allow yourself to feel the feelings. Set your timer for 10 minutes, close your eyes and just allow yourself to feel whatever is going on. Setting a designated amount of time will ensure that you don’t stay in this place forever, but sometimes we just need to feel something to remove its “charge.” Our society is constantly rushing through life. Give yourself a moment to process how you feel before moving on.

2) Physically move the energy. Exercise, go for a walk in some fresh air, dance and shake it off! Whatever feels good for your body, do that. This never fails for me. Physical activity is so important for changing your vibration.

3) Take a nap. This is especially a good one if something really has you in a tail spin. I find that when I am overwhelmed, super anxious or just spiraling down a rabbit hole, that sleep or a quick nap always helps. It’s a reset for your brain.

4) Meditate. Similar to napping, this is a quick reset. If I am feeling particularly out of alignment, sometimes I will ask for guidance into what is actually upsetting me about a situation and go into meditation with the intention of clarity and peace. Having that intention can really change your perspective.

5) Journal it out. One of my favorite exercises when I am feeling ‘blah’ is to write a letter to God/my Highest Self/Spirit/The Universe (whatever you want to call it!). I’ll write out how I am feeling, what I am looking for guidance about, etc. Then I take a few deep breaths and ask that God write through my pen and I will write a letter responding from God back to myself. Don’t question what comes through, just write. At the end you can read it back to yourself. I guarantee it will be something beautiful.

6) Tapping (i.e. Emotional Freedom Technique). This is such a powerful tool that helps rewire and regulate your nervous system! If you have no idea what I am talking about, you can easily YouTube it or check out one of my favorite teachers here.

7) Rest. Yes, if you are sick or not feeling well, sometimes, the best thing you can do is take radical care of yourself and give your body a chance to rest. Don’t judge yourself. Don’t do anything. Just be with yourself, allowing and accepting that rest is a natural rhythm of life.

Like I said earlier, what you do will depend on the situation. Listen to your body and your intuition as it guides you to what it needs most.

Sometimes you need to call a friend and just get out of your own head. Sometimes you need a change in scenery. Maybe you want to write someone you love a letter or put on an outfit that makes you feel like a boss.

There’s a million ways to raise your vibration. What I want to be clear about is that when you are out of alignment, I urge you to do the work of first allowing yourself to feel and process those feelings. Getting back into alignment is not about bypassing what is going on. It IS about giving yourself a certain amount of time to feel it (doesn’t need to be long!) and then choosing to do something that raises your frequency.

This is part of being a human. It is also important for developing our emotional intelligence.

I’m simply suggesting that you don’t have to stay “down in the dumps.” You get to choose to return to a state of peace and wholeness.

Some moments will be easier than others. That is ok. Learn what you need to learn from each situation and then move on. Staying stuck in the past does not help anyone. And start ingraining the belief in your mind that everything is always happening in your favor.

One of my favorite things to say to myself with my hand on my heart (I learned this recently from Mel Robbins): “I am ok. I am safe. I am loved.” I say that to myself until I can FEEL it and that always makes me feel amazing.
